Tutorial seven - assistive technology
Assitive technology (AT) - what is it?
Cook and Hussey 1995 describe AT as 1. the science or study of the practical or industrial arts. 2. applied science. 3. amethod, process etc. for handling a specific technical problem.
Dave from Kimiora school came in to give us an intro to all sorts of AT devices he uses for the children in his school that have severe disabilities. Check out kimora school on my side panel.
we also had a number of equipment from Star Educational - a service that is able to provide heaps of interesting AT devices!
I was particuarly interested in the Talking greeting cards -
Talking greeting cards that allow you to record and send your own personal voice message. Recording time: 10 seconds Record speech, music or any sound effect. Your recorded message will play as the card is opened. Message can be re-recorded as many times as you wish. Draw, paint or stick to create a special card for any occasion. A self-adhesive clear pocket is included - Option to add a photograph or artwork.
each talking card is $15
really good for those who don't remeber things - such as people with TBI
Also good for those who have difficulty communicating

Tutorial Six: the internet and online communities
Online communities....where do you begin...You've got the usual Bebo, Facebook, Myspace, there's a recent hype around 'Twitter' - don't ask me about it tho..i know nothing! But its all places where we fit ourselves in and communicate with other like minded people
FACEBOOK - for example - is free online community that allows you to keep in touch friends and family around the world
Services provided: Users create their own profiles this includes a personal photo, and you can choose to disclose lists of personal interests - your current 'status'-- "in a relationship" or..."its complicated" , it also allows you to exchange private or public messages, or if a friend is online too you can begin an online chat - much like that of oldschool 'MSN'. You also can do quizzes - want to find out the name of your first child (?!)
Kollock (1998) talks about people joining online communities searching for increased reciprocity, increased recognition, sense of efficacy and sense of community. This is in effect what Facebook can offer
Ethical issues: Facebook like any online community contains many ethical issues - such as privacy problems, authorized consent etc etc etc. Although one does not have much control over what another can 'post' about you - such as comments or pictures. You have the choice to block/deny people if you do not want them to have access to your site.
Benefits over traditional ideas of community:
Facebook provides a connection between you and another person who may live minutes...to miles away! its easy and its instant.
You can meet people with similar interest that you may not have met otherwise. and possibly best of all there's no cost to it!
And if you really dont wat to speak to the person....you can always block!
Benefits traditional ideas of community have in comparison: Everyone made the effort to keep in touch - be in the same place at the same time....and being face to face!

Tutorial 4 & 5 - video production
so! we had to work in small groups on this one in order to plan a 30sec video
first we had to set up a youtube account...I'm no tek wizz but head to the site and its pretty easy to follow your nose in order to set it up
YouTube -whats it all about? its a video sharing website where you can share, view and upload video clips. If you are a registered user you are able to upload an unlimited amount of videos, but if you are an unregistered user you are still access and watch most YouTube videos - the usual
planning - the number one step to making a video!
Storyboarding and scripting helped to decide the path we wanted to take for our clip. We were able to talk through and put all our ideas out there - and then put the together in a reasonable ( :/ ) order!
Without it ya got no flow....no style... - storyboarding really helps to keep all aspects of the film in line and lets ya know what yr doing

Tutorial two: Digital cameras
A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature”. Briefly discuss this statement in relation to digital camera technology. What would you consider to be some of the pluses and minuses digital camera technology holds in relation to more traditional film based cameras?
Digitital Cameras come with a lot more features compared to the old film camera. It gives you the option of previewing your picture, the choice to save or delete it ; you choose which photos you wish to print; you can edit your photos, i.e. zoom, get rid of red eye, change colour and saturation etc. photos quality is clearer and you can put photos straight from your camera on the computer or television via a simple cord. The minus? - although it comes with alot more features it means it comes with confusion - the many various features take away from the simple click and go of the old film camera.
List some of the ways that digital images can be stored transferred and manipulated using other communications technology.
Photos on the camera are stored on a memory card and can be transfered on your computer by either a cable or some computers allow you to put your memory card straight onto the computer. The images and then uploaded on to the computer using special software installed on your computer.
Given the prevalence of image capturing devices, and thinking about the issues discussed in tutorial one, consider what sort of ethical issues may arise with their use.
Whoever has access to your memory card can easily upload any photos to the world wide web that can identify you or others.
Briefly discuss some of the ways that digital images could, or are, being used in occupational therapy practice.
Digital images could be used in practice to take photos of an individuals home environment for future reference. They could also be used for the OT to consult others - ACC, enalble, supervising therapists.
Provide a brief summary of the services offered by Flickr.com
Flickr is a photo networking site that allows people to share photos and keep in touch with others.
Name one other photo storage website which offers a service similar to Flickr.com
Snap fish http://www.snapfish.com/helpstorage
Explain what the difference is between a digital and an optical zoom
Optical zoom is when focal length and magnification changes before a photo is taken. Digital zoom happens after the photo has been taken and it crops the picture. Optical zoom gives you a clear image than digital zoom.
Explain what is meant by the term mega pixel
A pixel is one of millions of tiny coloured squares that make up a digital image, like a mosaic.

tutorial one - information technology
This first tutorial discussed information technology and the ethical issues surrounding it.
Information technology is defined as:
The production, storage and communication of information using computers and micro electronics.
Hanks, P. (ed). (1989) Collins Concise Dictionary. Glasgow: Bath press.
IT is certainly prevalent in our society and today it has become common place. This includes computers, TV's, DVD players, mp3 players, cel phones, the use of the Internet and various search engines, email and social network sites.
The technology that I feel most comfortable using include - celphone, mp3 players, computers, Internet - network sharing sites such as Facebook, Trademe etc, email, music downloads and now...blogging
Through my fieldwork experience I have seen IT used in various occupational therapy settings. It is most commonly used to store medical notes and to communicate with other therapists or staff members. Computers withhold case files and documents they are also used to send emails to staff or possibly clients. Cel phones are used in order for therapists to keep in touch with one another, it also enables them to get in touch with clients. They can also be used for emergency situations or for safety reasons on home visits.
When using IT devices we must consider the ethical considerations - security and privacy - such as the display of personal information or photos. Here we can discuss 'computer ethics' - a branch of practical philosophy which deals with how computing professionals should make decisions regarding professional and social conduct.
(retrieved 1 march www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_ethics)
A way to protect ourselves as individuals or therapists in practice is by presenting informed consent. This is a legal condition whereby a person can be said to have given consent based upon a clear appreciation and understanding of the facts, implications and future consequences of an action.
Retrieved 1 March (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Informed_consent)
When discussing the ethics of IT we can discuss intellectual property - Intellectual property refers to creations of the mind: inventions, literary and artistic works, and symbols, names, images, and designs used in commerce. The term IP reflects that this subject matter is the product of the mind and that IP rights may be protected the same way as any other form of property.
We must also consider those who don't have access as others might. This is called Social Justice and refers to those who have limited or no access to IT. Because of this they are unable to share in the benefits and opportunities of others.
"Social justice requires that society develops policies and practices to more fully include people who in the past had limited access to computer resources" for example: the poor or elderly.
This could also apply this to OT's in practice who are not familiar with the latest technology or computer software systems.
I believe that as therapists we have to be realistic in moving with the times in regards to technology, especially if it is required within a certain workplace setting, in particular hospitals where the use of technology is extrmely prevalent. Therefore a knowledge of technology (IT) is a great tool for the advancement in OT practice. Knowledge of ethical issues in IT is similar to ethical issues we come across in practice - obtaining confidentiality and privacy for our clients etc. Although I beleive that we must be more vigilant as information shared through technology can be easily accessible and has the possibility of spreading to unwanted sources.
