Tutorial two: Digital cameras

A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature”. Briefly discuss this statement in relation to digital camera technology. What would you consider to be some of the pluses and minuses digital camera technology holds in relation to more traditional film based cameras?

Digitital Cameras come with a lot more features compared to the old film camera. It gives you the option of previewing your picture, the choice to save or delete it ; you choose which photos you wish to print; you can edit your photos, i.e. zoom, get rid of red eye, change colour and saturation etc. photos quality is clearer and you can put photos straight from your camera on the computer or television via a simple cord. The minus? - although it comes with alot more features it means it comes with confusion - the many various features take away from the simple click and go of the old film camera.

List some of the ways that digital images can be stored transferred and manipulated using other communications technology.

Photos on the camera are stored on a memory card and can be transfered on your computer by either a cable or some computers allow you to put your memory card straight onto the computer. The images and then uploaded on to the computer using special software installed on your computer.

Given the prevalence of image capturing devices, and thinking about the issues discussed in tutorial one, consider what sort of ethical issues may arise with their use.

Whoever has access to your memory card can easily upload any photos to the world wide web that can identify you or others.

Briefly discuss some of the ways that digital images could, or are, being used in occupational therapy practice.

Digital images could be used in practice to take photos of an individuals home environment for future reference. They could also be used for the OT to consult others - ACC, enalble, supervising therapists.
