Tutorial seven - assistive technology

Assitive technology (AT) - what is it?

Cook and Hussey 1995 describe AT as 1. the science or study of the practical or industrial arts. 2. applied science. 3. amethod, process etc. for handling a specific technical problem.

Dave from Kimiora school came in to give us an intro to all sorts of AT devices he uses for the children in his school that have severe disabilities. Check out kimora school on my side panel.

we also had a number of equipment from Star Educational - a service that is able to provide heaps of interesting AT devices!

I was particuarly interested in the Talking greeting cards -
Talking greeting cards that allow you to record and send your own personal voice message. Recording time: 10 seconds Record speech, music or any sound effect. Your recorded message will play as the card is opened. Message can be re-recorded as many times as you wish. Draw, paint or stick to create a special card for any occasion. A self-adhesive clear pocket is included - Option to add a photograph or artwork.
each talking card is $15

really good for those who don't remeber things - such as people with TBI

Also good for those who have difficulty communicating

Tutorial Six: the internet and online communities

Online communities....where do you begin...You've got the usual Bebo, Facebook, Myspace, there's a recent hype around 'Twitter' - don't ask me about it tho..i know nothing! But its all places where we fit ourselves in and communicate with other like minded people

FACEBOOK - for example - is free online community that allows you to keep in touch friends and family around the world

Services provided: Users create their own profiles this includes a personal photo, and you can choose to disclose lists of personal interests - your current 'status'-- "in a relationship" or..."its complicated" , it also allows you to exchange private or public messages, or if a friend is online too you can begin an online chat - much like that of oldschool 'MSN'. You also can do quizzes - want to find out the name of your first child (?!)

Kollock (1998) talks about people joining online communities searching for increased reciprocity, increased recognition, sense of efficacy and sense of community. This is in effect what Facebook can offer

Ethical issues: Facebook like any online community contains many ethical issues - such as privacy problems, authorized consent etc etc etc. Although one does not have much control over what another can 'post' about you - such as comments or pictures. You have the choice to block/deny people if you do not want them to have access to your site.

Benefits over traditional ideas of community:
Facebook provides a connection between you and another person who may live minutes...to miles away! its easy and its instant.
You can meet people with similar interest that you may not have met otherwise. and possibly best of all there's no cost to it!
And if you really dont wat to speak to the person....you can always block!

Benefits traditional ideas of community have in comparison: Everyone made the effort to keep in touch - be in the same place at the same time....and being face to face!

Tutorial 4 & 5 - video production

so! we had to work in small groups on this one in order to plan a 30sec video

first we had to set up a youtube account...I'm no tek wizz but head to the site and its pretty easy to follow your nose in order to set it up

YouTube -whats it all about? its a video sharing website where you can share, view and upload video clips. If you are a registered user you are able to upload an unlimited amount of videos, but if you are an unregistered user you are still access and watch most YouTube videos - the usual

planning - the number one step to making a video!

Storyboarding and scripting helped to decide the path we wanted to take for our clip. We were able to talk through and put all our ideas out there - and then put the together in a reasonable ( :/ ) order!
Without it ya got no flow....no style... - storyboarding really helps to keep all aspects of the film in line and lets ya know what yr doing
